Kyle pulled the car into a distant parking spot at their apartment complex. Close parking was difficult to find at that time of night. Rachel hadn’t said a word, though neither had he. Her dress was so torn that she had to hold it to her chest to keep her breasts covered.

Turning off the ignition, he looked up at the sky. A surprising number of stars were visible despite the city lights. “What now?” he asked, knowing that it was one of those potential relationship-ending questions.

She looked out the window. “I don’t know.”

“Are we...are we over?”

A tear ran down her cheek. She turned to him and took his hand in hers. “I don’t want to be, but I understand if you don’t want me anymore. For what it’s worth, I’m sorry. I have a weakness I never knew about and...and I don’t know what to do about it.”

Kyle squeezed her hand and took a moment before speaking. He had never been so hurt by anyone, but that pain was only possible due to his love for her.

“I don’t want to be over either,” he said. “But—I don’t know. I just don’t know. Brian said that you need that kind of thing. Is that true?”

“Honestly, Kyle, I don’t know. It’s just as new to me as to you. But...maybe? I saw you, you know...last night in the car and tonight in the restaurant...you were touching yourself.”

Brian closed his eyes. “I know.”

“Does that mean...that you enjoyed it too?”

The final twist of the knife. His life as he knew it flickered and faded until sputtering out completely. All that remained was some new, darker, broken self. He could no longer hide nor deny his true feelings. In this new life, Kyle was little more than an orphaned, mangy dog hardly worthy of the few scraps of attention his masters were generous enough to offer. He wasn’t sure why or how, but he deserved it. It was almost as if he’d always known it was inevitable—that this was always his destiny—that he’d fall in love with the woman of his dreams only to be doomed to a lifetime of sharing her with other men.

He had an exit. She was showing him the door right then.

He didn’t want to go.

“I did.”

Rachel took a deep breath and then pressed Kyle’s hand to her bare chest. “This will always be yours.”

“And mine yours, my love.”

“It’s settled then, we go back to work tomorrow?”

Kyle swallowed. His throat was as dry as Death Valley. “Your dress is torn.”

“Oh, well, Brian said he’d get me a new, skimpier one.”

“So, that’s it then? This will be like, a regular thing?”

“I don’t know...probably. We’ll be able to pay our bills.” She handed him the roll of cash, still moist from a cocktail of body fluids. “Take this and fix the car.”

“Okay.”

“I should get cleaned up and get some sleep. Brian said tomorrow he’s letting some of the crew stay late with us. He invited you too—maybe as a peace offering? It might be an even longer night than tonight was.
